Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli tendered his resignation on September 9, 2025, as sweeping protests led by Gen Z spiraled into violent unrest. His decision follows the deadliest demonstrations in decades, with at least 19 people killed and hundreds wounded during clashes triggered by a controversial social media ban.

The protests erupted after the government blocked platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, X, and YouTube—citing non-compliance with new registration laws. Young protesters, demanding an end to corruption and more accountable governance, rallied in large numbers in Kathmandu and beyond. Their calls echoed across the nation, amplified by a stirring wave of digital dissent.

The situation escalated dramatically when security forces opened fire on demonstrators attempting to storm Parliament. Amid rising anger, homes of top leaders—including Prime Minister Oli, President Ram Chandra Poudel, and other senior figures—were torched. Protesters also set fire to the Parliament building and party offices, intensifying calls for systemic change.

In response to the growing outrage, the government reversed the social media ban late on September 8. Several cabinet ministers also resigned in quick succession, including the Home, Agriculture, and Health Ministers, along with multiple MPs, as pressure mounted.

Oli’s resignation letter cited the country’s deteriorating stability and stressed the need to facilitate a political resolution. President Poudel accepted the resignation and initiated discussions to form a new interim government. Meanwhile, curfews remain across key cities, schools and airports are shuttered, and protests continue amid mounting uncertainty.

The youth-led uprising has left Nepal at a pivotal political crossroads. With the government dismantled, the nation now navigates uncharted waters where demands for youth-led reforms and integrity in leadership are shaping a new chapter in its democratic journey.
