Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged significant relief and development initiatives for Manipur during his first visit since intense ethnic violence erupted in the state in May 2023. With over 260 lives lost and many displaced, the government is rolling out aid to rebuild trust, restore services, and provide housing for those affected.

In a message directed at the conflict-stricken communities, Modi offered a substantial ₹500 crore aid package specifically for those displaced by the clashes. He also committed to constructing 7,000 new homes to replace houses destroyed during the unrest, aiming to provide safe, stable shelter to thousands displaced by the violence.

Modi’s announcement came during rallies in Churachandpur and Imphal, two of the districts most impacted by the fighting between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. He appealed to all parties to renounce violence, urging them to walk the path of peace to secure their children’s future.

Alongside relief measures, the Prime Minister also laid stone for multiple large-scale development projects. Nearly ₹7,300 crore worth of infrastructure work has been approved, including upgrades to highways, road connectivity, drainage systems, and urban amenities. Among the projects is a major ₹550 crore IT development scheme in Imphal, as well as enhancements on two key national highways to improve accessibility in hilly regions.

To mend the social fabric, Modi emphasized that peace between the hill districts and valley areas must be rebuilt, and urged all outfits to engage in dialogue. He said the government stands with those displaced, offering both financial and logistical support.

Modi also inaugurated projects completed in Imphal and laid foundation stones for new works in Churachandpur despite inclement weather disrupting his travel plans. His visits to relief camps and interactions with affected families were meant to signal the government’s renewed commitment to healing and rebuild.

This outreach comes with the state under direct central control since early 2025, following the resignation of the state leadership. The central government has focused on restoring normalcy, improving infrastructure, and reasserting support for all communities.

In sum, the package of aid, housing, and the promise of peace aim to bring a new phase of recovery for Manipur. But success will depend on implementation, ongoing dialogue, and ensuring that the benefits reach those worst hit by the crisis.
