The United States government has announced the temporary closure of its embassy in India, citing technical and administrative reasons. The embassy, located in New Delhi, along with several US consulates across the country, has halted in-person operations until further notice.

In an official statement, the US Embassy clarified that all scheduled passport, visa, and consular services have been temporarily suspended, but emergency assistance for American citizens will continue to remain available. The embassy has urged applicants with upcoming visa or passport appointments to monitor their registered email IDs and the official embassy website for rescheduling updates.

The announcement has caused concern among thousands of Indian students, professionals, and travelers awaiting US visa processing. Many applicants were preparing for interviews related to student (F1), work (H1B, L1), and tourist (B1/B2) visa categories ahead of the fall season.

Officials from the US State Department stated that the temporary shutdown is part of a broader system upgrade and internal review aimed at strengthening data security and improving service efficiency. They assured that operations are expected to resume soon, once necessary checks and updates are completed.

Meanwhile, the embassy has advised applicants not to visit consular premises during this period and to avoid booking travel until new appointment dates are confirmed. Emergency cases, such as medical situations or deaths of US citizens in India, will be prioritized through special communication channels.

The closure affects not only New Delhi but also US consulates in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata, which handle thousands of visa requests daily.

Travel experts believe the suspension could cause short-term delays in US travel plans, particularly for those applying for new or renewal visas. However, embassy officials reassured that once systems are restored, additional slots will be opened to accommodate affected applicants.

The US government emphasized that the move is temporary and urged applicants to remain patient while technical teams work to restore full services as soon as possible.
